A Spanish and English website: decisions before starting

A bilingual website has two journeys to review. Before translating, decide who will use each version, what information they need and who can handle the resulting enquiry.

By Numuno Digital, an independent web design and marketing studio in Marbella.

Translate the need, not just the menu

Prepare services, scope, contact and notices for each version. An English button leading to information only in Spanish interrupts the journey. Review form messages and text displayed when an action fails too.

At Numuno, this guide exists at /es/journal/spanish-english-website and /en/journal/spanish-english-website. A shared identifier does not require word-for-word translation: both texts should answer the same question naturally.

Plan URLs and language switching early

Google recommends separate URLs for language versions and explains how to identify alternatives with hreflang. These signals describe variants; they do not guarantee rankings.

Check that switching language keeps the topic: a guide should lead to its translation and a service to the same service. If a version is missing, agree what its link will do before publishing.

Review actual copy on small screens

Translated headlines and buttons change length. Test the longest service name, open navigation and contact routes on a phone in both languages.

Our Clean Eco Glass case includes Spanish, English and French. It is an example of a service website with multiple versions and direct contact; it does not establish that adding languages alone generates enquiries.

Assign review and ongoing updates

Record who approves technical terms, coverage and contact details. When a service changes, update all its versions and review internal links. An outdated translation may describe an offer that no longer exists.

Choose languages according to your audience and response capacity. Include translation and review in the proposal so each additional version has a clear scope.

For a business serving customers in both languages from Marbella, our Marbella web design and marketing guide connects these decisions with service pages, coverage and handling enquiries. Include only languages in which you can maintain information and respond to customers.

Your checklist before starting.

  • Complete content per language and planned response
  • Separate URLs and links between equivalent pages
  • Mobile checks for headlines, navigation and contact
  • Responsibility for keeping both versions current
