Creating a website and appearing on Google: what to prepare

Conceptual illustration by Numuno Digital about preparing a website for discovery. It is not an actual Google search result.

Your new website can look excellent and still be difficult to find. Consider search before publication: when planning pages, explaining services and agreeing the handover. If you are commissioning a business website, these are the decisions worth including in the proposal, without needing to become a technical specialist.

By Numuno Digital, an independent web design and marketing studio in Marbella.

Publishing, indexing and ranking are different steps

Publishing makes a website available at its domain. Indexing means Google has included a page in its index. Ranking concerns where that page appears for a particular search, and positions can change. A published website is not a promise that it will appear first when someone searches for your service.

Preparation starts before launch. Clear structure, original information and appropriate access provide a useful foundation. Ask the person building your site what will be prepared and how the handover will be checked.

Plan the structure before choosing the colours

Start with what a customer needs to find. A construction business may need to explain bathroom work, complete renovations and how to request an assessment. A salon needs services, professionals and an appointment route. These are content-planning examples, not a requirement to make a separate page for every keyword.

Group genuinely different needs and describe the places you actually serve. A useful page explains what you do, who it helps, what is included and how to take the next step. Repeating the same text with a different city name offers little to someone comparing suppliers.

Design should make the business understandable

Photography and animation help present a brand, but important information should not exist only inside an image. Services need clear text, descriptive headings and links to their pages. Write for visitors rather than filling the page with repeated search phrases.

For the Clean Eco Glass website we organised services, completed work and languages so visitors could understand the offer and make contact. That structure is planned during the project. A catalogue, restaurant menu and booking system require different journeys, even when all three need a considered visual presentation.

Ask for real checks before launch

The review should confirm that public pages work and do not retain test-site restrictions that prevent indexing. The domain and page addresses should be consistent. You do not have to configure these settings yourself, but you should know who checks them and receive an understandable result.

For a redesign, review existing addresses before changing them. Decide whether an old page should be kept, updated or redirected to a suitable destination. Include that continuity in the project rather than discovering a broken link after publication.

Also check the mobile journey: read a service, find the contact route and submit an enquiry. A thank-you screen and an enquiry received by the business are different checks. Being findable and being contactable should both be part of the handover.

After publication: check progress rather than promise dates

Google Search Console helps review how Google discovers and processes pages, and shows search queries, impressions and clicks. A sitemap communicates important addresses. Sending one or requesting a crawl does not guarantee an indexing date or a ranking.

Ask for a documented starting point and the appropriate business access to the tools. Later, you can distinguish a page Google has not discovered from one appearing for relevant searches or one receiving visits without enquiries. These are different problems; publishing more articles is not the answer to every one.

Do you have to pay Google to appear?

Appearing in Google's organic results does not require a payment to Google. Professional design, development, content and follow-up work can still have a cost. Google Ads is paid advertising with a separate budget; buying ads does not buy an organic position.

Distinguish the SEO foundation delivered with a new website from ongoing search work. The proposal should explain what is completed at publication and which later content, analysis or improvement tasks are separate. This makes it possible to compare real scope rather than an unexplained label saying SEO is included.

What to ask for in your website proposal

Ask for agreed pages and functions, included content, mobile review, indexability preparation and the required access at handover. Clarify the domain, hosting, maintenance and who handles a problem after launch. The initial price and ongoing costs should be understandable before you commit.

At Numuno Digital, you can start with a free demo to assess the direction of your website. We then agree scope and price. If you want a site that explains your business and is prepared for search work, we consider design and search readiness together from the beginning.

Your checklist before starting.

  • Pages answering real services and customer needs.
  • Original content, clear headings and easy mobile contact.
  • Access and indexability checked before publication.
  • Existing addresses reviewed when redesigning a site.
  • Access, ongoing costs and follow-up agreed at handover.
